She had a massive red afro that was impossible to miss, paired with a cool green jumper that complemented it perfectly. As I looked at her hair, I could already picture the different shades of red and purple I would use to capture its fluffy texture in a painting.

I thought she would make an interesting subject to paint, but I missed the chance to ask her the first time I saw her. Fortunately, I spotted her again the following week—this time on Perth Road, right in front of the Tower building. I approached her and asked if she would be willing to model for my project.

I might have first noticed Mickey while working on campus. I remember seeing him walking around—his hair had these really noticeable highlights. Then, during the summer last year, I got a shift working with other student ambassadors, and that’s when I officially met him.

I thought his hair would be fun to paint, and he just had an interesting face—something about him stood out. So I walked up, said hi, made a bit of small talk (I don’t remember exactly what I said), but I do remember telling him I was an art student at DJCAD and that he had an interesting face.

We started talking about some of the themes in my work, and I found out he was studying Psychology and French. Funny enough, some of the books I was reading for my dissertation, he’d already read. That sparked a really engaging conversation about art and identity—some of which actually ended up in my dissertation.

I hadn’t planned to meet Mickey that day, but I’m really glad I did.

I have been thinking a lot about my own identity and how it differs from the way other people see it.

Constantly being asked the question, “Where are you from?” and despite fully knowing the answer myself, I began to question my origin.

I was raised solely in the English language, as well as some idoma(my tribal language). English grew to become my dominant, and eventually my only fluent language. As a direct consequence, it affected the way I spoke and simultaneously confused those around thus giving rise to the paradox.

To some, I looked Nigerian but I didn't sound like one. Physically I matched the description but vocally I did not.

This painting titled “Family Portrait” is an expression and confrontation of the seemingly paradoxical impression I portray. The figures centred in the middle are all fashioned in the Victorian style while the other figures surrounding the central ones are wearing traditional Idoma attire. 🟥⬛🟥⬛🟥

This is definitely my biggest painting yet and it’s definitely safe to say that it has been my most challenging. This paintings has taken me over 4 months and it still hasn’t been completed (partly due to a lack of materials and burn outs).

They say bigger is better, but is it always? During my last semester I bit off more than I could chew 🙂‍↕️ and that did affect my grades a little bit 🤏 .

This painting was an experiment, I wanted to know the limits of what I could do. I’m not quite sure I’ve found them though 😂. I mean sure the last painting was a bit more than I could chew, at first, but will I stop eating?
Absolutely not😂. I’m as hungry as ever and I’ll keep testing my limits till I’m satisfied 😮‍💨.

Double consciousness the sequel.

Double sided paintings sounded laughable at the beginning but I wanted to do something different from the conventional presentation of paintings. Being smitten by social theories of self I began to see my one identity in light of intersectionality.

People are multifaceted and there is always more to them than what meet eye. The double sided paintings I made serve as a visual metaphor that speaks to the interaction of social identity.

Although the amount of money plays a part in this, it’s not the only reason. I’d rather sell a piece for pebbles and see it treasured as a diamond 💎, than sell it for diamonds and see it tossed aside😒.

The “Paradox of Blackness” is my first ever solo exhibition and it has been a huge success🥳🍻🥂. The show kicked off on the 15th of June with the opening and has continued to run and will continue to run up until the first week of July.

I decided to showcase my work now, as a mock degree show, a prequel for my sequel (actual degree show) next year (2025🗓️✍️). I wanted to get people’s raw reactions to my work before the grand finale next year. The show has gone way better than I imagined and all the reactions I got to the work were priceless❤️🥹. One of the reactions that stands out for me was when a man saw my work and started smiling, he told me the work makes happy and he couldn’t stop smiling when he sees the artwork😁.

Major shout out to everyone who was involved in making this solo exhibition a reality from the publicity to the instal to introducing me to the amazing @kathryn_rattray who manages the gallery space.

It’s almost like a trance sometimes 🤔👇🏽

I am fully aware of the actions I am taking to create my desired outcome but it’s also something more✨. Visualising and idea and then materialising it is a mesmerising process😯. From the concept to the final outcome, painting for me feels like a journey, one which can change directions at any intersection.

You really need to invest in upcoming artist asides from everything that audio has already explained which I totally agree with btw 👍🏾. Buying art is like buying land its value only continues to appreciate over time if you buy a painting for £500 today it may be worth £10,000 tomorrow (sometime in the future).

Now I am not just saying this because I want you to buy my art, help me help you, help us. It’s literally a win, win you invest now make more money later and I get funds to create more art which you can invest in again😁.

4 months in the making 😤 and now I can finally say goodbye to my 3rd year at art school🥂🥳. It was honestly so exciting to see the paintings installed in the space, especially when they spun 💃🏾🕺🏿🌪️.

At the beginning of the install process I was genuinely scared that they painting would fall and the frames would crash🙂‍↕️. However! None of that happened and as you can see the work is a success. Had to let go of some ideas just now but I’m definitely bringing them back in fourth year💪🏾.

I disagree 🙃. I am not procrastinating I’m just….🤔 wait a minute🤔, I am 😅. Sometimes it’s just like that, days when I make up a long studio to-do list that I completely ignore🤷🏾 and times when I try to force myself to work I honestly regret it but then later come to appreciate it 🤦🏾‍♂️ honestly it’s such a weird dynamic.
